A day in the Friuli countryside
View of the Roccoli near Gemona during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
Today it is time for a beautiful trekking in the hills near Gemona. Spending the day in nature is so liberating. The tour was guided by an expert and he took our small group to visit the Roccoli in the area.
Those are arboreal structures created on the top of an hill or a mountain to capture birds. This area has been through the century a place where life was tough and food was scarce, and using the Roccoli was a great opportunity to better the diet of the families living the area. The Roccolo has concentrical rounds of three different kind of trees. One for attracting the birds, one for making them land in the area and one for imprisoning them once the nets are casted.Â
In the area there are few Roccoli still in existence and they are re-created and maintained in order to study the birds and their migratory paths, and in some cases to capture them in a natural way in order to track them later. During our visit we went to see few of those and it was so interesting to discover something so typical of the area. In fact this method was used only here.
