The Main Street between ancient architecture and modern restorations

Walking around in Gemona I loved the way the ancient architecture was conserved and managed and how modern style restorations were created in a unifying atmosphere that creates an even more interesting ambient.Â
Even if Trieste, my city, was not reached by the 1976 earthquake, the story of devastation is one that I grew up with. Therefore, during my stay, I decided to take the time to visit the ‘Museum of the earthquake’. It is a small location that narrates the history of the destruction also focusing on the story of the rebirth of those places. I felt a deep sadness for the wounded earth and hearts, but I was struck with admiration on how people reacted.Staying close together and giving themselves a second chance, they successfully managed to give to the area a flourishing touristic future, based on the territory and on the culture.
After my tour, I decided to challenge myself, under a scorching sun. I sat on the stairs in the square to paint the Main Street that crosses the whole town. A street where stores, bars and galleries stay side by side. While sketching, and struggling, I took in the feelings that this city has brought to me. I loved this town and the people that here I met. My landlords at the Locanda, the creator and manager of the Ecomuseo and his colleagues, the owner of the art gallery, the young guy at the tour information. It is incredible how many connections you can build in just few days.
I feel so lucky to have this opportunity to learn from people that love their town and do what they do with passion and generosity. It was a great example to bring with me in my tour. A great example on how to love and push forward my project of the Italia Gran Sketching Tour. Thank you Gemona for being my home for few days.
