Feeling the power of history in the Valley
Exploring the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
The Valley of the Temples was on my bucket list for such a long time. I heard so much about it and I imagined it like a real travel through history. And so it was! It was probably one of the days I enjoyed the most during the tour.
The valley is a huge archeological park that guides you to visiting the Greek temples and structures in different stages of conservation. A long walk in history, literally! I was expecting more the opportunity to walk in the temples and explore the ruins, but I suppose with the amount of tourists they have this kind of freedom would be too dangerous to the survival of the park.
In the afternoon I took part in a guided tour of the catacombs that are something very fascinating because it gives you an idea of the history following the Greek period. The valley was a place of early Christian cult and therefore there are remains of tombs everywhere. Doing the tour with an archeologist was a great opportunity to learn a lot about this aspect of the valley.
In this painting I depicted the ‘Temple of Concordia’, the best conserved due to the fact that through the centuries it was a church and therefore it was taken care of constantly. The name is not clear where it comes from, a mystery covered by layers and layers of history.
