The walls of the ancient Pilgrim Hospital in Majano during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.

After this sketching people experience, before going on, I decided that I wanted to paint also the outside wall, that depicts the entrance door to the compunt and the church on the right. This structure, I discovered, was very popular throughout the centuries because the area was the perfect passage for those traveling toward Jerusalem and toward Rome, and this is why it was maintained throughout the centuries.

The volunteer lady also showed me inside the church which has some incredible frescoes from the Middle Ages, mixed with more ‘recent’ art. We also discussed about how hard is the management of cultural heritage, because people are not very sensitive and the procedures are quite complicated. This is definitely a topic that through my tour I want to explore. 

The importance of heritage

Italy is a country so rich of heritage that is hard to keep it all floating. Culture unfortunately is not central in any agenda and sensibilizing about this topic is something I really feel connected with. I believe culture should be a responsibility of everyone  also because it can help us see the world in a different way and it can bring us toward the future. 

Caring for the beauty of the past, I think, is definitely a start to understand diversity, to appreciate how different cultures connected and developed and maybe it can teach us how to create a world in which unity is possible everyday more. Understanding that the importance of the past is universal and uniform and each one can bring us something and it should not be discarded.
