Father and son memorials to to the XX Century Wars
The monuments to the war soldiers in Udine during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
Second stop for me is Udine, the second biggest city in Friuli. Udine is a city that I always fascinates me. The center is gorgeous with small streets and majestic buildings. Walking in the center is like living in another époque, it brings me in the past. But this time was different because I happened to be in the city just before the beginning of the Friuli DOC, the Wine Festival that every year brings a great crowds to the city and therefore the center was ‘under construction’ with gazebo and closed streets everywhere.Â
Fortunately, I had the opportunity to meet with Chiara of FAI Udine (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) and have lunch with her. She suggested some very interesting places out of the touristic route. The magic of knowing people that love culture and heritage is that they allow you to see places that you would probably don’t see in a one day stop.Â
The first place I went was Piazza XVI Luglio where two monuments remind us of the soldiers of the wars of the XX Century. The square hosts a temple to remind the fallen soldiers of the First World War and a monument to commemorate the Italian resistance against fascism during the Second World War. Two monuments from the Valle architects, father and son, that in this way created the bridge between the old and the new Udine, in perfect harmony. The perfect subject to sketch, while reflecting how long still we will need as humanity to built memorials to all the suffering that we inflict to each other. Sketching is also this, an opportunity of reflection and of transmutation of something bad into something beautiful also through the love you feel while creating.
