My first view in the city of Bergamo
The monumental Cemetery of Bergamo during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
Once arrived in Bergamo I got lost, even with the GPS. On a big crossing entering the city it went crazy and I took right instead of left. I ended up on a long boulevard and in front of me I saw those monumental buildings and I couldn’t understand what it was.
I stopped to look at the map but also to draw this monument. When I get to a city sometimes it happens. It is the monument that choose me for drawing and not vice versa. I stood in the shadow and I started drawing. I just did the pen and I discovered only afterwards that the ink was not waterproof. Also in this cases I love art because from a mistake you can figure out a way to play with it and to make out a different effect then the usual one. It is so much fun when it happens. You have to think outside the box and challenge yourself of taking a different direction.
Anyway, after finishing I discovered that this is the monumental cemetery of Bergamo that was built at the end of the 19th Century in the eclectic style. This cemetery took the place of the other three cemeteries of the city. In the main buildings that you see there are the offices and the chapel. While reading about this, I found out that cemeteries are a recent innovation. It was in fact only at the beginning of 19th century that Napoleon prohibited to bury people in the city in the churches courtyards and this lead to the planning of spaces outside the city to take this role, creating the cemeteries that we know today, a part from those English Agatha Christy movies.
