The Grandious tomb of the Obstrogoth king
The Mausoleum of Theodoric in Ravenna Painted during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
As a kid in Italy you hear a lot about Theodoric the Great and its realm in the heart of Italy, a reign of richness and beauty, even if this population is called: the barbarians.
I have never had the opportunity to visit Ravenna before and I was mesmerized by its beauty. Definitely a place to be back for more art and more painting, and a deeper visit of its historical sites.
This is the famous Mausoleum of Theodoric in Ravenna, built in 520 AD by the king, as his future tomb to show all of its power. Â After all the mosaics and the gold of the churches in the city, this mausoleum is very solemn, divided into two decagonal orders, one above the other. All built from Istria stone, the incredible fact is that the roof is a single 230 tons stone of 10 meters of diameter. Absolutely impressive!
The Mausoleum is just outside the historical city and it is surrounded by a park that calls for a peaceful walk in a sunny day. And that was my choice: a nice walk and then stopping to paint this part of history that will now be in my memory forever.
Because when you catch a moment on paper, you will never forget it. And that is what I love of drawing and painting on location!
