The house of the Italian War Museum
The magnificent castle of Rovereto painted and visited during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
Once arrived in Rovereto, the rain started pouring, so I decided to take a tour of the Museum of the Second World War and to have lunch at the entrance of the city, looking at the incredible castle that oversees the city thanks to its strategic location over a rocky hill on the right bank of the river Leno.Â
The first central core of the castle was built between the 13th and 14th centuries and it is structured as a military fortress. In the 15th century the complex passed to the Venetians, who transformed it into one of the best examples of late-medieval Alpine fortification still existing. With the Venetians defeat of 1509, the stronghold fell into neglect and was seriously damaged during the wars.
Fortunately today it is back to its splendor and it hosts the Italian Historical War Museum. So after lunch I decided to take a walk in a deserted city and climb the hill to visit the museum. Walking along the numerous rooms so much is shown: artillery pieces and a railway cart pierced by a shrapnel, memories of the monarchy and of the new formed Italian Republic, and many displays dedicated to the memory of war heroes and places. All together it is a very interesting place to visit, both from the architectural point of view and from the museum displays one.Â
