Controlling the open sea from the Ligny Tower
I couldn’t miss the Ligny Tower in Trapani during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
The extreme point of the city of Trapani is occupied by the Ligny Tower, a coastal watchtower that was built in the 17th Century to save the city and the population from the attacks of the Barbary corsairs.Â
I arrived to this tower on my first morning in Trapani, and I visited the museum and the top of the tower where you can have a magnificent view of the sea and of all the coast and the city. The controlling role of the building is so clear from the roof. And if now it is just a beautiful view, it gives me shivers the idea that in the past, soldiers up here were controlling the horizon to defend the city and the population. The destiny of so many people in their hands, or better in their eyes.
After some days, I had a great opportunity to come back to the tower during the ‘Mattinate FAI’, an event organized by Fondo Ambiente Italiano (a foundation that preserves heritage in Italy) together with the schools. Students had prepared a presentation about Trapani and its Greek mythology roots. Such a fascinating topic narrated with the energy of adolescence.  I love the idea that students take part in those activities. A sign that there is hope for the future through culture. Knowledge of the past, in my opinion is fundamental to build the future and teenagers should be in the first line in this!
