Clouds and wind on the Florio’s residence in Favignana
The Florio’s Palace in the Favignana Island is a perfect painting subject for the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
My visit in Favignana was a journey to discover this paradise and in one day it felt like a tour of the seasons.
In the morning, a warm, sunny day accompanied me around the port and the old city center, and up the hill to see the castle. But, half of the way up, the wind started blowing, and I had to give up.
Back in the deserted center, I couldn’t skip painting the Neo Gothic palace that has been the residence of the Florio family for many years. This family brought industries and prosperities on the island. And this palace, with the beautiful garden, was too important in my opinion and I wanted it to be present in the tour, no matter the weather.
But maybe the weather had a deeper influence than I thought on my experience of the place! When I painted the sketch of the Florio’s Palace in the Favignana Island, I wanted to show the chills down my spine. It came out more like a Dracula atmosphere and I love it. It was like playing with the weather myself and feeling surprised of the result.
That is what I love about watercolor. You can control it, but never completely and it is always open to a surprise.
