The church with the perfectly preserved mummies
The Church of Sant’Andrea in Venzone during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
The first stop of the day is Venzone, a town that I knew because of the Festival of the Pumpkins, but that I never managed to visit before. The town has won the award couple of years ago as the most beautiful Italian village, and I can understand why. The small historical center is surrounded by walls and everything is perfectly preserved, also because most of the town was rebuilt and restored after the earthquake of 1976 recreating the original aspect of the town.
After a tour in the sunny streets I went to visit the Church of Sant’Andrea. A first testimony of the presence of a church in this area is from the 6th Century. Later the town grew and a bigger church was built in the 13th Century by the same architects and workers that made the Cathedral of Gemona. This church is also very majestic and beautiful, and very rich of history.
An interesting note is connected to the mummies that are visible in the baptistery. During the 16th Century while working in the area several corpses were found. The mummies are perfectly conserved because of the composition of the soil and because of a fungus that absorbs water, and they have been a great source of historical information on the life in the area in the Middle Ages. And an interesting piece of history to see.
