The picturesque manor that oversees the town
The Castle on the hills in Fagagna during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
In front of me a long day of visits of several small towns that are all more or less famous thanks to castles, churches and historical centers. All towns are near one another and I decided to connect them one another through my trip.
The first stop is Fagagna, one of the towns that are included in the list of the most beautiful hamlets of Italy.
Arrived in town, I toured the historical center which is small and it has a mixed flavour of old and new buildings. This area was once upon a time covered with beech trees, Faggi, from which the name of the town derives. On the top of the hill, there are the ruins of the castle that in 983 was possession to the patriarch of Aquileia Rodoaldo, and it remained in a direct patriarchal domain until the advent of Venice in 1420. I climbed up and on my way at a certain point the view opened and i couple admire the old tower and the building that is now a restaurant.
The castle was involved, for its strategic importance, in many of the conflicts that marked the history of the region, but in the sixteenth century its decadence started. Of the articulated manor, today only traces of walls remain: the ruins of a tower and some buildings, including the church of San Michele. The best kept is the small structure transformed in a restaurant, which is the one you see in the painting.
