A stop in the middle of the Friuli countryside
The castle of Arcano di Sopra during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
While continuing my tour I took an improvised detour toward the Castle of Arcano di Sopra, based on my view of the brown sign that indicated the heritage sites and a curiosity regarding the name. Arcano in Italian means mysterious and it sounded so interesting to discover if there was anything true.
Once in front of the castle I was mesmerized by the feeling of the jump in the past, as it is often happening during this trip. The castle is a medieval construction that includes the hamlet within its walls and nowadays it is transformed in a place to visit for some great wine tasting. Today it is closed, but the relaxed atmosphere was perfect for sketching. I was surprised by the result so near to a cartoon, following the roundness of the hills on which the castle is built.
I discovered that the name is based on the name of the family of the owners: Tricano, from the three back dogs (cani) on the coat of arms. But my taste for mystery was not left unsatisfied. When they restored the castle in the 20th Century, a body of a stabbed woman was found and it appears to be the wife of the Count Francesco that disappeared mysteriously in the 1635, shortly after the marriage.
