Sepia tones for the castle at the heart of the town
The ancient castle in the town of Valvasone painted during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
Staying in Valvasone, however I couldn’t avoid taking the time to paint the castle. The whole city develops around it and it is such an interesting structure that shows the passing of time with the structure growing in successive developments.Â
The castle today appears as a massive building devoid of those towers, those crenellated walls and those drawbridges that characterized it in the past. However, it is easy to understand how the access arch to the village was actually a much higher tower and the road below a drawbridge.
Around the defensive walls there was a canal. It was for further defense but also an access road. For some time the castle could be reached by river from the Tagliamento which descended closer to Valvasone and the boats docked directly in the cavana housed in the basement. The interior of the castle is available for visits only on certain periods and unfortunately for me today was not one of those days.
