Seeking inspiration from the masters
Painting the statue of the painter “Il Giorgione” during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
During my first day of solo travel, my first stop for a coffee happened to be in front of this statue, that commemorates the great painter “Il Giorgione”. He was born here in Castelfranco Veneto in 1478.
I decided that painting him would be a great inspiration and a good auspice for my journey and for my career. And in a way it immediately happened, the brushstrokes came very naturally and shortly I was very happy with my work. Simple and communicative, a combination that I like much.
Of course I also gathered more information about the painter, that I knew by name but not for his work directly. I was astonished to read that he was a prodigy. He started painting very young and was sent to Venice to do its apprenticeship in Giovanni Bellini bottega. He was the master that, together with Titian, revolutionized the world of painting creating the distinctive Venetian school of Italian Renaissance painting, which achieves much of its effect through colour and mood, and is traditionally contrasted with Florentine painting, which relies on a more linear style lead by drawing.
Giorgione, who died in his thirties, is known for the elusive poetic quality of his work, though only about six surviving paintings are firmly attributed to him. One of those is in the cathedral of Castelfranco Veneto, the Madonna with St. Francis and Liberalis, more commonly called Pala del Giorgione, which in the background shows the towers of the old home town of the painter.
I was astonished by the beauty of the work, and it seemed incredible that so much was accomplished in so few years of life. It made me think about how much passion counts more than time, most of the time. A lesson to be learn. A lesson about giving all and not procrastinating. A very important lesson for me, especially now!
