Drawing under the auspices of the Roman gods
A Statue from the Garden of Villa Pisani of Stra sketched during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
The gardens of Villa Pisani are immense, acres of gardens, stables, and a garden maze where I got completely lost. Next time I will try making myself a map. It was a very interesting experience, because iI always thought they were sort of fakes. But this time I really couldn’t find my way to the beautiful central tower and has to surrender.
With a feeling of defeat, I strolled in the park that was inspired in its design by the French gardens of the first decades of the eighteenth century. But its design was repeatedly changed during the 19th and 20th centuries and is based nowadays on the intersection of optical axes. A choice that allows to see all the possible perspectives that the garden offers and its beautiful choice of statues and fountains. This allows the visitor to feel the vastness of the place and the opportunity to live a solitary experience.
That was my case. After walking around, I stopped in the shadow to paint this statue of the garden because I felt the atmosphere was perfect. This putto and its small fountain in between pine trees looked so cute. A beautiful spot to paint, ruined by dozens of mosquitoes that persecuted me along the whole drawing. So if this sketch does’t look at its best please blame the insects.
