Playing with perspective in my last night in the city
The two cathedrals of Piazza Paolo VI in Brescia Sketched during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
The days in Brescia have been very productive, maybe because the city is beautiful and very inspiring. This draw was my last sketch and I decided to challenge myself with a perspective that would include the whole side of the square where the cathedrals are aligned.
The square, of medieval origin, represents the heart of the city for the important historical buildings that overlook it, symbols of the civil liberties and religious traditions of Brescia. On the east side are the Palazzo del Broletto, which includes the civic tower and the loggia of the shouts and the two cathedrals called Duomo Nuovo and Duomo Vecchio. The Broletto is the oldest public building in the city, the seat of the municipal magistrates in the municipal age. Today it houses the Prefecture, a police station, the Provincial Administration and Municipal Offices.
The New Cathedral (1604-1825) reveals the signs of the long history of its construction in the baroque (lower part) and rococo (upper part). The Duomo Vecchio or Rotonda, dating back to the 12th century, is a rare and remarkable example of a circular medieval stone building, which contains numerous works of art.
To capture the square I had to sit on a corner of the street and it was fun to play with the perspective while working straight in ink. It is a big challenge knowing that you cannot go back, but is also fun to find ways to hide eventual mistakes that you are bound to make if you are working fast and you are looking forward to the aperitivo. All together I was very pleased of the result and that is why I decided to live this without the color.
