The rationalist square in the heart of the old city
Piazza della Vittoria in Brescia Painted during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
After leaving the Garda Lake, I decide to stop in Brescia to spend the 15th of August there. In Italy this day Ferragosto is a big holiday and usually everything is closed and so I decided to stay in a bigger city that would have more option for visit and probably even surviving. Once arrived in Brescia I got lost to find the hotel that I had reserved but by going around with the the motorcycle trying to find the right path in a maze of tiny streets I had the opportunity to see the historical center and to immediately fall in love with the city.
Strolling in the city I discovered immediately Piazza della Vittoria, one of the three main squares of the old town. I was immediately fascinated by the structure of this square with a lot of convergent lines, and with its whites and lights to play with in watercolor. I sat on the side of the fountain that enriches one side of the square and drew the rationalist style buildings trying to capture their power and strength.Â
The square was built in the 30s and that took the place of the medieval town, making this the newest square in the old town. A lot of history was destroyed to build this square and I questioned myself about the concept of new and old, about history and progress. It is always a fascinating subject to think about in my opinion and personally I never reached a verdict.
