The majestic and unexpected beauty of the cathedral
Palermo’s Cathedral painted in watercolor and ink for the #ItaliaGrandSketchingTour
In my first afternoon in Palermo I went walking around in exploration. I have to admit that I arrived here without doing any research about the city. I knew about the cathedral but after four months around Italy I wasn’t expecting nothing different. But discovering the Cathedral while walking in the city center was breathtaking. You can’t imagine it’s majestic beauty, that appears to you just around the corner. From a small alley to this giant of architectural power.
The structure is huge and build in different styles throughout the centuries, giving the structure a sense of mystery and invincibility. The Norman influence is predominant and it gives to the cathedral the touch of unicity that makes it so special.
This drawing was done on my last day in Palermo, after admiring the church in different occasions, especially at night or under the rain. Being able to paint it was a great sensation, and it brought me great relax. It was in the morning and there was a lot of young people around and it was very pleasing to spend the time there, in this joyful atmosphere.
When drawing something so big I realized that the selection part is probably the most complicated because you feel the urge to put all the beauty you have in front on the paper. This is a skill that you acquire through time and it is sometimes overwhelming, because you take the responsibility of this selection. And this is what differentiate the artist, the role of choosing what to communicate and the emotion you want to express.
