The ancient ice place in the city
La Ghiacciaia in the center of Udine during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
In the center of the old town, there is a landmark that is very well known: La Ghiacciaia, the palace of the ice. This was a commodity for which Udine one hundred years ago was very famous. It is strange to thing now how important was ice in the economics of the town, since having a reserve of ice could support the food industry and its commerce and therefore creating richness in those places where ice was available and stored.Â
Since the beginning of last century the place became a tavern with typical food and wines and it was a meeting place for irredentists during the First World War. Today it is a place that proudly offers traditional dishes using local raw materials. A restaurant with a splendid terrace overlooking the canal and framed by an ancient wisteria that you can see in the painting, even if not bloomed.
Being one of the landmarks of the city I decided that painting it was a must and it was a great relaxing time, sitting by the canal and drawing the perspective of the roggia and the roofs. But I knew there was time for an aperitif and a new sketch and I went t hunt for a good place.
