The castle of sea and sun
The castle of La Colombaia in Trapani painted for the #ItaliaGrandSketchingTour
This is a medieval castle, a fortress that protects the city from the enemies coming from the sea. It is known as the sea castle, one of the 5 castles of Trapani. In the middle of the sea, the island was populated since the Greek time. The temple of Vestals was located here, and the doves for the sacrifices were here kept and freed in the sacred occasion. That is where the name comes from: Colombaia means the house of the doves.
Nowadays the building is abandoned, more or less. There are projects for its rehabilitation as a museum but it seems they never get started. People of Trapani really love this place but it seems that the complications linked to the restoration take over constantly.
In my opinion, this structure is breathtaking and it has a huge potential due to the unicity of this place.
Watercolor is a way of life
Spending the time looking at the boats fluctuating in the afternoon light was such a peaceful and mindful experience. Painting the water in watercolor is such a challenging and relaxing experience. Watercolor painting brings me in a place of peace and acceptance, no matter the difficulties.
The water sometimes doesn’t go where you want or you can’t capture the light the way you wish. But you know that it is the moment you are living that matters, and there will be another opportunity, another trial and another step toward your growth.
This is why I love watercolor: you have to constantly face your limits and constantly work on moving one step forward, always accepting the phase you are in and always looking for the courage to make another trial.
For me watercolor is is a way of life: ever changing and overly colorful!
