The cathedral on the hill that overlooks the city
Duomo of Saint Peter Apostle in Schio during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
Walking in Schio, the duomo is definitely one of its main features. The cathedral rises on the top of the Gorzone hill, a small rocky outcrop, that stretches over the city center, also forming the offshoots of the castle hill. The current aspect of the cathedral, with its neoclassical forms, is the result of numerous interventions carried out between 1747 and 1879 but the church was originally set on this area in the 10th Century.
Frontally, the cathedral rises above a white stone wall that completely hides the view of the hill on which the cathedral is built. Two large symmetrical stairways access the large terrace which is located in front of the church. All together the cathedral is imposing and it looks huge and bulky from the square, creating a strange imbalance with the rest of the town. But definitely interesting to paint.
