The climbing church of Sambuca
At the shadow of the Church of Our Lady in Sambuca di Sicilia during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
This town is in the list of the most beautiful Italian towns of the Association Borghi più Belli d’Italia and for this reason I decided to make here my last stop of the 2019 tour, on my way back to Trapani.
The sun high in the sky, I realize how lucky I have been with the weather in the past months. I park just outside the historical center and I start walking toward the top pf the hill. The city in fact is built all on a slop, with the main street that climbs straight to the top, surrounded by the aristocracy building. At the top there is the cathedral, an ancient and imponent yellow church of tufo and behind there is the belvedere. A small square that overlooks the whole valley and you feel you can see the whole area in one glance.
On the way back I got lost in the side streets, and it is like a labyrinth of shadowy alleys with small low houses crowded together. Such a different experience from the main street, different times that cohabit in the same place.
Before leaving, after lunch, I stopped in front of the Church of Our Lady which I found interesting because it is built on a slope and it faces you boldly in its beauty and simplicity made of different layers and levels of decorations.
