Cathedral of Santo Stefano in Concordia Sagittaria

Cathedral of Santo Stefano in Concordia Sagittaria

On the way to Rome… a stop in history

The Cathedral of Santo Stefano in Concordia Sagittaria during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.

Back on the road I decided to stop in Concordia Sagittaria since it is mentioned as a rich resource on Roman history and hen I got there it was a market day and it was incredibly crowded considering the size of the town. It was sort of a clash to see all the modernity while taking a walk through history, but I suppose that this is Italy and its heritage.

Just some notes that I found fascinating…

The town was founded in 42 BC as Iulia Concordiaby the Romans. With the threat of barbaric invasions, the colony in the 3rd century A.D. became a stronghold thanks to the establishment of an arrow factory and these arrows were called “sagittae”. Therefore the name Concordia Sagittaria. It is so fascinating to learn this kind of things, don’t you think so too?

I took a walk around and decided to paint the Cathedral of Santo Stefano in the center of Concordia Sagittaria, in the shadow, on the opposite side of the square. Beneath the church there is the Paleo-Christian complex and on the north side (right in the painting) there is a section of the consular Roman road, Via Annia, which has been perfectly preserved and it is still an incredible visit to be done.
