Bassano: the bridge, the grappa and the Alpines
The Bridge of the Alpines in Bassano del Grappa during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
In Italy, when we talk of the Alpine Army Corps we immediately connect with the city of Bassano del Grappa. But not because of war, as you might imagine (like I did) but because they rebuilt the bridge after the destruction of the Second World War.
The bridge itself is particularly important because of its design by the famous renaissance architect Andrea Palladio. In fact even if the bridge is completely built in wood, it has always being reconstructed and restored using the original plans, without the need to review its structure. Today the bridge is a place for people to meet and have a drink, thanks to some of the historical places that are open just at the extremities of the bridge.
With my friends we went for a sketching aperitive in a bar with a terrace on the river that faces the side of the bridge. A perfect point of view to admire the construction and to spend some time in the shadow with a glass of the typical Friuli wine that is produced around here.
