The town of the archaeological site of Palù
A view of the beauties of the town of Polcenigo during the #italiagrandsketchingtour
After the visit to the church of San Giacomo, I went back to the town center, but first I tried to capture this corner of the town from the hill. An audacious perspective including the river that crosses the town and some of the beautiful building and villas from the 15th Century that enrich the historical center. I loved that background of the mountains even if the sky was a bit cloudy.
Polcenigo was a great surprise, with its small streets, the loggias and the rich buildings that testify the history of the town under the Venetian domination.
As many towns in the area, Polcenigo was inhabited since the prehistory. But here in particular, an hunting and gathering tribe inhabited the area and constructed the archaeological site of Palù. An area of pile-dwelling village from the 5th Millennium BC when, unique in the world and that is now visitable.
Through the centuries the town passed different domination, some more favorable and some less. In particular the Turkish armies arrived here and destroyed everything, while it was reconstructed by the Venetian that gave the town the actual aspect.
