The hydroelectric power plant near Maniago

Reflecting on renewable energy under the rain

The Pitter hydroelectric power plant near Maniago during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.

While in Maniago I searched for things to see (and paint) in the surrounding area and the A. Pitter hydroelectric power plant came to my attention. It is located in Malnisio, just few kilometers off from Maniago and it is a jewel of industrial architecture from the early 1900s.

The power plant is not in activity anymore but it has been perfectly conserved as a museum. Inside it still preserves all the machinery, equipment and tools of the hydroelectric pioneering movement of the last century. Since 2006, the Central Museum has become a center for the promotion of scientific, technological and environmental issues. Unfortunately it was not open to the public when I went there but it was a great view from the outside too. Architecture and nature in combination, to produce electrical power in a natural way. It is interesting to see that renewable energy is not something new, but the opposite. Looking at this place it feels that instead of implementing more and more those technologies, as humans we became more and more dependent of fuel. Bringing our species in the terrible situation we are facing nowadays.

This reflection was even more powerful because I took it under the pouring rain, on a covered (fortunately) picnic table just outside the complex. I felt the power of water and of nature all around me, while I was trying to stay dry and manage a fast sketch of this impressive place. How can we work more in synergy with nature to live all happily ever after?
