The school for the ancient art of mosaic
The entrance to the School of Mosaic in Spilimbergo during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
Once in Spilimbergo I couldn’t miss to visit the School of Mosaic that is famous all over the world for the great production of this wonderful art.
The Mosaic School of Friuli has been active since 1922. It was founded in the post-war period to offer young people study and work opportunities. And it continues still today with its triple goal: education, promotion and production. I think it is a great example on how schools could and should work, focusing on the talents of students and helping them finding their way in life, and connecting them with the rest of the world to facilitate their career. From Spilimbergo school in fact students go to work all over the work, in the most important laboratories dedicated to this art.
I discovered that Spilimbergo as location of the school was not chosen by chance. The history of mosaic in fact is strictly linked to this territory. Nearby Aquileia is an important Roman and early Christian mosaic site, and Venice was the cradle of the Byzantine mosaic tradition. Also the school brings together the tradition of the mosaicists and terraces of the Friulian foothills who from the sixteenth century onwards have created the destiny of the mosaic art with their creations all over the world. From the Library of Congress in Washington to the mosaic works of the War Memorial of Canberra, to the interventions of the Paris Opera, the Friuli artists were called everywhere in the world to bring their expertise.Â
Today the Mosaicist School is a professional school which aims to give meaning to history and to create a space for contemporary solutions, for stimulating research, creativity and personal participation. And this can be felt strongly while visiting the schools. Hallways and rooms are organized for the study but also as a sort of museum to explain the history of mosaic, the techniques and also as a exhibit of some incredible works of the students.
