Palladio masterpiece in Vicenza
Painting the incredible interior of the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
My trip couldn’t continue better. We went to the beautiful city of Vicenza to admire the masterpieces of the great architect Antonio Palladio.
After visiting the Palladio museum and enjoying the historical center of the city, we headed toward the Teatro Olimpico.
It was my first time and I was taken by surprise by the grandeur of this place.
From outside it is a very anonymous place, probably because all the buildings around where already existing and Palladio had to find a way to fit a theater there.
The theater was built starting 1580 and it is house of operas and plays still nowadays. Going to see a opera there definitely made it to my bucket list.
The trompe-l’œil onstage scenery, in the painting, was designed by Vincenzo Scamozzi, to give the appearance of long streets receding to a distant horizon. It was installed in 1585 for the very first performance held in the theatre, and is the oldest surviving stage set still in existence.
This incredible beauty is registered in the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
