A liberty building that faces the blue waters of the lake
The lakefront of Saló on the Garda Lake during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
While riding along the coast of the Garda Lake I decided to stop in Saló because I was very curious to visit the town because of its history during the Second Wolrd War.
The town is wonderful, I took the time to walk along the lakefront enjoying the sun and an ice cream in one of the historical places near the duomo. After visiting and strolling in the city I have chosen to paint this view of this liberty house that really inspired me with its decorations and bright yellows and greens. Something new compared to the past drawings and colors.
If you are not Italian you might wonder why this town is famous, The reason is that during the Second World War the Saló Republic was created by the Nazi Germany in September 1943 after the armistice and it lasted until April 1945. Benito Mussolini was the leader of this puppet country in order to allow the Germans to militarily control this part of the territory.
All together I couldn’t find any memory of those years in the town and I suppose this is a choice to let go of this tragic past and live more in the beauty of the present. One may agree or not on this, but sometimes letting go is a good way to move forward. I believe that letting go and forget are two very different things and the results of each are very different.
